The plant of Bauhinias rufescens;

The plant Bauhinias rufescens, “Nammaari” in Peulh language, a silver butterfly tree, is a much branched climbing shrub or small tree growing up from 4 to 15 meters tall. The branches are often armed with pointed short lateral shoots. Its native is a dry savannah habitat, the tree is always scraggy, stunted and multi stemmed. The plant is deciduous in drier areas, but retains its foliage in the moister areas. The tree is a valuable multipurpose in its native environment, where it is gathered from wild for its medicinal uses, tannins, fibre and timber. Sometimes it is planted in villages, but widely grown outside its native, range as an ornamental tree.

Bauhinias rufescens habitat:

Wooded savannah, edges of seasonal ponds, riverbanks, bases of dues, sand on sandstones, sandy clayey soils, humid soils, laterite and rocky soils. Its range is sub Saharan tropical Africa from Mauritania, to Senegal, Sierra Leon, Niger, and east to Sudan, Ethiopia.

Medicinal uses of Bauhinias rufescens:

The bark is astringent, it is used in treatment of dysentery, the roots’ bark and trunk are used to cure chest complaints, syphilis, and other venereal diseases, leprosy, diarrhea, as well as reducing fever. The leaves and fruits are used in treatment of diarrhea and dysentery; they are also used externally in the form of decoction for treatment of eye diseases. The root is antipyretic and astringent; it is used to treat intermittent fevers. The root is also diuretic and is used for gonorrhea, fever, colic. Root and bark together are used to treat leprosy. While bark alone is used for smallpox, syphilis, hepatitis, chest pain, diarrhea and dysentery. The branches are tonic for infants, and for stomachic and expectorant properties.
