The virtues of using biogas;

What are the virtues and health improvement of using biogas?

What are the benefits of using biogas?

Biogas typically refers to a gas produced by the biological breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen.
1.    Biogas originates from biogenic material and is a type of biofuels.
2.    Biogas is produced by anaerobic digestion or fermentation of biodegradable materials, such as biomass, manures, sewage, municipal wastes, green wastes, plant materials, and energy crops.
3.    This type of biogas comprises primarily methane and carbon dioxide, with traces of other gases, see biogas composition.

Wood gas:

1.    Other types of gas generated by use of biomass are wood gas, which is created by gasification of wood or other biomass matters.
2.    This type of gas consists primarily of nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide, with trace amounts of methane.

Biogas as a fuel:

1.    The gases methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide can be combusted or oxidized with oxygen.
2.    As air contains twenty one percent of oxygen, therefore this energy release allows biogas to be used as a fuel.

Low cost energy:

1.    Biogas can be used as a low cost fuel in any country for any heating purpose, such as cooking.
2.    It can also be used in modern waste management facilities, where it can be used to run any type of heat engine, to generate either mechanical or electrical power.
3.    Biogas can be compressed, much like natural gas, and used to power motor vehicles.

Biogas production:

1.    Biogas is anaerobic digestion; it is practically produced as landfill gas or digester gas.
2.    A biogas plant is an anaerobic digester that treats farm wastes or energy crops.
3.    Biogas can be produced by utilizing plants or anaerobic digesters that can be fed with energy crops such as maize silage or biodegradable wastes, including sewage sludge and food wastes.
4.    During the process, an airtight tank transforms biomass into methane gas, producing renewable energy that can be used for heating, electricity generation and many other operations that use any variation of an internal combustion engine.

Benefits of using biogas:

1.    There are many advantages of using biogas; the main but indirect benefit is that using biogas could potentially help reduce global climate change.
2.    In fact, manure that is left to decompose releases two main gases that cause global climate change; namely nitrous dioxide and methane.
3.    Nitrous dioxide warms the atmosphere 310 times more than carbon dioxide, while methane warms the atmosphere 21 times more than carbon dioxide.
4.    By converting cow manure into methane biogas through anaerobic digestion, the thousands of cows in any country in the world would be able to produce millions kilowatt hours of electricity, enough to power thousands of homes across that country.
5.    In realty, one cow can produce enough manure in one day to generate three kilowatt hours of electricity, while only 2.4 kilowatt hours of electricity are needed to power a single one hundred watt bulb for one day.
6.    Therefore, it is estimated that by converting cow manure into methane biogas, instead of letting it decompose, we would be able to reduce significantly global warming by many million metric tons.
7.    Besides to the indirect benefit of using biogas, there is direct benefit, like using the gas for cooking, space heating, water heating, and process heating.
8.    If the gas is compressed, it can replace compressed natural gas for use in vehicles, because it can fuel an internal combustion engine or fuel cells.
9.    Methane within biogas can be concentrated via a biogas upgrader to the same standards as natural gas and bio methane.

Virtues and health improvement of using biogas:

1.    Using biogas benefits to improving the rural standard of living.
2.    Reducing air and water pollution.
3.    Getting rid of hazardous smoke of cooking.
4.    Saving collecting firewood time.
5.    Saving cooking time.
6.    Improving hygienic conditions.
7.    Saving fossil fuel costs.
8.    Protecting forests by reducing cutting trees.
9.    Using crop residues for animal fodder instead of fuel.
10. Saving money by producing high quality fertilizer.
11. Enabling local mechanization and electricity production.
